We got to the Beijing train stations with tickets to Tianshui, Gansu in our hands. Gansu is in Northwestern China, in the middle part of the Silk Road between Xinjiang Uighur Autonomous region and Shanxi Province. We didn’t know much about where we were going, but we did know that we had an 18 hour train ride ahead of us…in the hard seat section

yikes. hard seat. last time i took hard seat i got trapped right next to the open window and while i was asleep with my head hanging out the window for fresh air, we drove through some sort of coal mine thing. i woke up totally covered in coal dust. and the only hotel we could find had no showers!
