SOMEWHAT SPOILERY DISCUSSION OF PACIFIC RIM FOLLOWS: So, I loved - loved - that Pacific Rim centered a best-bros relationship between a man and a woman. I can't even tell you how happy I was that there was no big kiss at the end or anything. Mako's a really interesting character, and I bet she's seen a lot. I wanted to write a little something ( Read more... )

Yay! Mako! I was so pleasantly surprised by Pacific Rim all 'round! Man, they were saddled with some terrible trailers, and then surprise! A really fun movie appears!

I was so sadddd that they killed the Kaidanovskys so quick! I wanted to know each and every thing about them. And dear ol' Herman! My favorite things about the movie were, basically in order: Mako never macking on anyone and being super cool all round; Herman and Newt arguing but secretly being ride-or-die; Hannibal Chau; and then of course the Kaidanovskys. Which is to say: SQUEE!!

Thanks much for your encouraging comment! I was pretttty nervous about Mako's voice (and lost a bit of time down the Wikipedia rabbit hole trying not to be horrifically culturally insensitive in re manga, which are really not in my wheelhouse!) man, what a great character she is.

This movie just came out last week here in Japan (whyyyy so late, Japan?) so this is perfectly-timed to make me happy! I love seeing all those characters through Mako's insightful eyes (the Kaidanovskys! I want a thousand stories for them!), and the discussion of what it takes to be a pilot in general was so interesting and thought-rprovoking and I loved it.

Hooray! Japan's lateness has teamed up with my procrastination to equal happiness! We'll call it a win!

YES. THE KAIDANOVSKYS. This was such a visual movie; Lady Kaidanovsky had so few lines, but man oh man she had a hell of a lot of body language characterization. I want to know everything about them. And also Hannibal Chau. Well, maybe I just want to be Hannibal Chau. shifty eyes

One thing I really liked, that others have touched on more eloquently than I, is that del Toro sort of made it explicit that you didn't have to be the strongest or the smartest to help out, but you had to be a great co-operator. That's really different than what you usually see in this kind of movie, and I really dug it!
