As you have seen in my previous post, I have watched only one episode (not one series. one episode) of anime for 2024-Q4. Also, my 2024 Steam playtime numbers show a dramatic decrease in playtime from October to December.
The cause of this? A game called Blue Archive.
A couple of online friends have been playing this game, and I thought that some of the waifus were pretty cute. And on September 10, 2024 I decided to try it out and made an account. And it has been an... interesting experience.
Blue Archive is an epic Anime RPG game... no, that's not entirely true. They temporarily changed the caption of the game, allegedly for the keywords "epic," "Anime," and "RPG." Anyway.
Blue Archive is a tactical squad-based mobile gatcha Anime waifu RPG game (do you need me to add more descriptors?!) You play the role of a Sensei (Teacher,) and it is your job to guide your high school students through their lives - from helping them study for school, accompanying them in buying macaroons, all the way to... giving up your life to protect them.
Combat-wise, it is, like I said, a tactual squad-based game, but your students will move towards the enemies and shoot them automatically. Your only input would be to activate their active ability ("EX Skill.") Generally your goal would be to kill all enemies within a certain amount of time. The "complexity" of the combat comes from mixing and matching students based on their abilities, and this is where the gatcha part of the game comes in. Some students may be good for normal mission, and some students will be better for other special activities. And I guess... some characters you will want to get because they are your waifus.
There are a lot of stories in the game, from relationship stories with individual students, to the main story. The main story can be pretty serious - like having a paradox regarding paradise - or something dark - like having a character say "I will let go of all hope... I will never pray for happiness... never again." On face value it doesn't sound that bad, but... anyway. It can also be silly, like, arguably the most dangerous criminal(?) organization in Kivotos is comprised of a bunch of high school girls wearing ski masks, and its leader is a high school girl wearing a taiyaki paper bag as a mask. And was kind of coerced into being the leader of that criminal organization.
Regardless, nearly all of the problems are resolved with the power of Friendship, or "you do not have to face this alone, we are with you" (which does sound like the power of Friendship) or "believe in me who believes in you," and all those cheesy stuff.
I guess the stories in the game are very anime-ish, so it kind of scratches the itch of me wanting to watch anime. Sort of. It's hard to explain. But I'm going to watch two anime titles this quarter!
So far I've been playing everyday. Although there are a lot of activities where if you have already done them, you can "sweep" the activities. "Sweep" pretty much means spending your stamina and getting the loot and rewards without actually doing the activity.
So! Some screenshots for you to enjoy.
