That was a brillant review! These really were such powerful final episodes. I would say more put you have put a lot of what i think here. Alhtough i don't think Ianto's death was pointless.
No, I did phrase that somewhat poorly. From the point of view of the plot, Ianto's death was necessary in order to break Jack's pretty much last attachment to Earth. But inside the show nothing was achieved by his death, which is why I think some people are disappointed that Ianto didn't go out guns blazing.
I'm sorry, I'm random and don't quite know how lj works at all. I normally stay quiet in my little corner, but I thought your review was fantastic. ('Terrible'? What?) I completely agree with you about Ianto's death; it was horrible, yeah, and made me cry quite a lot, but it was also brilliant. I just couldn't see that this time yesterday. This is one of the few reviews I've read where the person writing it hasn't just said "It was terrible, never watching Torchwood again, RTD is a wanker". Thanks for that, too. You've made me feel better about Day Five. :)
This articulated everything I want to say but can't; the circular nature of the whole thing, the skewed morals, the finality and randomness of it all. It hurts, but it comes with the territory with Torchwood, if that makes any sense.
