I share the opinion of the great Danish Christian existentialist, Kierkegaaard: don't call anybody "Christian" before they're dead, just as nobody can be called a saint until they're dead. It's too high a designation: we're just apprentices at it. Soren also said that the greatest obstacles to practising Christianity were our fellow Christians, organized into churches. I call myself a "Roman Catholic"--in part b/c it has to do with family tradition and heritage and little to do with me--but "Christian" never. Youmay flatter me that way after I'm dead, but not now!
Your observation about criticism is mature and wise.
