Ron's treatment of his rat in Harry Potter is kind of logical but confusing.
He takes Scabbers out so he can not be bored... but no appropriate cage is ever shown. Actually it doesn't seem like JK Rowling would be for the mistreatment of animals, given how she views all the magical animals in the books.

Health advice for self-proclaimed experts and pet stores is often just starving your pet (hamster) of nutrients or some of the only stimulation they get all day in a tiny, neat little box that makes you sound like a nice person.
Just make sure that bowl of soup you get is enough nutrition for you for the day, because you shouldn't need anymore.
