A new batch arrived while I was away. I'm getting swamped with things to scan and I don't like it.
Nordic Princes (anthology) - it was like, a super secret project for the Nordic event - never announced anywhere, never on sell in shops, so the seller followed their lowly instincts setting the price. Oh well. The list of circles surprised me - a number of artists who, I reckoned, weren't even in the fandom anymore, but no Norssken or hygge! There is also a couple of newer circles and one or two I haven't really recognized.
It's nice to see artists having fun with the new canon material: about a half of stories are about either Nordicats or mochis or the Christmas episode. My personal favorites are the first comic about Nordics meeting their cat counterparts and the one by where Norway tries to introduce Iceland to Denmark, but the former hides under big brother's skirt tunic out of shyness and as a result the whole scene looks just plain wrong from an outsider's perspective (the outsider being Finland). Angie's story has some very amusing moments - Norway pokerfacing at his porn, Finland being an intimidating housewife - but I can't work out the plot without translation. Same goes for Kansai Local. is both sweet and frustrating to me: it comes this close to being Denmark-Sweden-Norway interaction. :(
All in all, it's more lighthearted and funny than "The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Nordic", but less heartwarming and focused on the whole family concept, imo. Less flashbacks and historical stuff, too - probably due to the fact we have some new canon to play with. But hey, it's cool. Anthologies shouldn't repeat themselves).
喫茶ほくおう by gimmick and ririn - a two-artists compilation. The first story is about Denmark, Sweden and Norway running a coffee shop where various nations stop by. It's one of the earlier works of gimmick and the artwork is quite different: it has a warm pencil-y quality that really suits the story with it slow, drowsy pace and cony atmosphere of a coffee shop. Oh, and there is a cutest panel featuring Sealand stuffing his face with, presumably, a cinnamon roll. And Sweden nomming on a chocolate chip cookie next to him. D'awwww.
The second one looks like it was made by the author of "Ebony", but I'm too lazy to check. The plot is fairly similar as well, except Iceland, due to sickness, starts seeing flowers on everybody's head. Different kinds of flowers, too. No, seriously, it's like a pilot episode of "Ebony", I recognize the forehead-feeling scene. Not to mention the mellow puffin. Would have put it into my giveaway pile, but that would require ripping the book in two or giving up gimmick's half. My body is not ready for either.
続 北美大へようこそ！by KtoB - AHAHAHA, it's cute as kittens and about as gen, but the author wanted to troll so they put the most perverted scene on the cover. Looks like Gakuen Hetalia to me? Several short humorous stories and one genderbent sketch. Interesting, this is the first time I see someone make drawing Norway's hobby and holy shit, this book is good news for anyone who ships Norway/Finland - their interactions just make me shed happy tears every time. Finland asking permission to flip through Nor's sketchbook (Norway being all lol whatever), then having a brief freakout thinking all Norway's artwork must look like "The Scream". So. Fucking. Moe. And I'm not even going to touch the last story - too moe to spoil.
Red clover by nonosnow - this one is a side story to "White Clover" and ideally should be shared together with it, which is awkward as I haven't even bought the other one yet. And blimey, it's stapled, not glued! WHY. Why every time I get a book that is perfect for illegal activities, like making scans, there are technical mishaps?
Anyway. Turns out it's Den/Nor\Ice rather than pure DenNor. First comes the flashback part: it's Kalmar Union timeline, Norway puts Ice to bed like a good brother, then goes off to screw Denmark who just got his ass handed to him by Sweden. SO MANY CHORES. I quite liked the parallel scenes showing how Iceland and Denmark are both clinging to Norway in their own ways. Then we're back in the modern day and apparently, everybody who used to sleep in one bed with Norway now has a crush on him. So Iceland gives him a clover flower as well and he ends up with two, which kinda bugs me because I'm a Westerner. Let's hope someone gives him another one asap.
Denmark's reaction to Iceland's crush seems to be something along the lines of "cuuuuuute! <3". Love rivalry: Nordics are doing it wrong.
Humpty Dumpty by Kansai Local - okay, I'm out of breath already, so. IT'S PORN. BY KANSAI LOCAL. Kalmar Union timeline - seriously, what's with Norway and comfort sex? The dialog is probably amazing, but alas, Japanese.
Aside from those, I still have "Hej! Scandinavia" by Hsing and also the DenNor one, where Denmark comes to Norway's place all cheerful and beaten up and Norway demonstrates a pretty wide range of facial expressions. What do.
