Yes- in Puerto Rico and in the rural south east as well. I think it is key that the prochoice movement be aware of and outspoken about forced sterilizations, especially when it seems to me that the same forces that prevent certain women from having children are the same forces that are now intent on forcing other women to have children. So much of this idea of opening the clinic on the reservation sounds implausible and that it will end up only being a vocal protest, but I can't help cheering when the mainstream women's organizations are locked into an electoral strategy that is ceding ground at an alarming rate

The war on reproductive choice is not the problem of women worldwide, in spite of what mainstream american feminist thought says. It is the problem of western women, usually white and not poor, who don't have to fight for their right to HAVE children.
Women of color who come from communities that have experienced forced sterilization and genocide, and who have been told by authorities that they should abort (or have to abort so that they can continue working under forced conditions) have very different ideas about this issue.
PP will not open their clinic on the Pine Ridge Reservation because it would open a whole can of (racist) worms that they really can't deal with.
First of all, the fight for reproductive rights is not synonymous with the feminist movement. I'm not arguing that the feminist movement is not a movement for white women of means and I'm not defending the racism of the feminist movement. Secondly, women who have resources have always had access to safe abortions. It is women who can't afford to travel, can't afford private doctors out of pocket, who will be hit the hardest.

1. The forced sterilization of Indian women (that is the really big one)
2. With respect to PP, Margaret Sanger's involvement with Eugenics
