It's a shitty day for institutional Catholicism, all the way around. Where to start, hmmmmm...

The absolute bare minimum, at least to my mind, would be to say that the priests involved ARE NOT any longer in positions to repeat the behaviors the church says it is shamed by. As near as I can tell from everything I've read and from the dates involved, the church has not said that. That makes the Catholic church as a whole complicit.

Untenable.

And I have now lost the last shred of respect I had for Weakland. How can someone say such a thing, in good conscience? It's like saying you know murder is morally wrong but had no idea it was against the law. And these are the same people who condemn masturbation and birth control. I think I'll spit on the cathedral lawn when I go out for lunch tomorrow.

What. The. Fuck! No understanding of its criminal nature? That is the biggest load of bullshit I think I've ever read. Those words don't even fit in my eyeballs all at the same time. That's just patently not possible. You know what else is morally evil? Lying your baby-raper-protecting ass off. Disgusting!

Not necessary to worry about the effects on the youngsters? The common view? Can we put this guy away just for saying that? Ugh! Sorry, had another bolus of pique to disgorge.

Gay marriage passed in the NY State Assembly with little grassroots opposition.
..."The state’s Roman Catholic bishops have been somewhat distracted, too, having focused their lobbying energies this session on defeating a bill that would extend the statute of limitations for victims of sexual abuse to bring civil claims, and have appeared unprepared for the battle over marriage."

The Catholic Church is clearly more concerned about their legal liability.
