So, as you smart grounded-in-reality people suggested might happen, my basil mostly died. But...mostly. The stuff in the middle of the ghetto greenhouse, the most protected stuff, still has some green leaves. So I guess we'll cut those plants down and see if they care to regrow. If you cut the basil to ground level and then put a really thick layer of mulch over the roots, they ought to grow back in the spring. My African blue basil has been resprouting for three years now.

Yep, I've had good luck with that method sometimes. Some basil is hardier than others, the African blue and Thai purple are both pretty strong. Right now though, it's my Neopolitan that's hanging on ;))
