The human cost of Wal-Mart's great prices

Apr 01, 2008 11:56

I've been tapering off my expenditures at places like Wal-mart for a while now. This story has pushed me to stop spending my money there completely.

"Unbelievable prices? How does Wal-Mart do it? Just ask the family of Deborah Shank."

The human cost of Wal-Mart's great prices

And no, this is not an April's Fool prank.

While certainly legal - it's not uncommon for insurance contracts to contain a codicil that entitles the company to recoup paid benefits in the case of a legal settlement as Ms. Shank's contract did. This case is so publicly egregious because of who it involves, and it's misdirecting attention away from the real problem, IMO. The problem is not Wal-Mart itself, but our laws that allow companies to include such ridiculous provisions in employee contracts. Instead of boycotting Wal-Mart (which people should do, anyway, not just because of this), they should be pushing for legislation to close the loopholes that allow companies to punish employees like this. I would suggest to everyone to take a close look at their contracts and insurance policies - I'll bet more people than not will find that their documents contain a very similar provision.

It looks like negative press and threats of boycotts got through.
