Aside from the actual tragedy of it, this sort of incident really makes you contemplate the nature of people, society, and apply contemplation to problem solving.
My mind went to the nature of gun control and utter moral breakdown within the individual, and found the key item in this tragic conundrum is personal control within your life. God and guns, basically. You can't get rid of them so I think everyone should get well familiar with God and guns and use them for personal protection and responsibility.
Imagine if this guy ran across ONE person with a concealed weapon while on this rampage? Might have been less deaths. People might complain that if you made all guns illegal that this wouldn't have happened, but guns exist and you could get them even if illegal. I draw your attention to the illegal drugs all over. What government can't control (which is almost everything) the fail safe should be god - personal responsibility within moral choices supported by society.
First, I echo the sentiments of the above poster, and I really hope the people at VT find some piece over the next few weeks. Second, RPI's handling of our situation wasn't all that great... They shut down the school, no one knew what was going on, there was a total lack of communication between the administration and even the staff, and to top it all off: Students were held at gunpoint by the troy swat team. I can understand a certain amount of discretion, but for christ's sake it happened at 10 in the morning and the school wasn't shut down until noon. WTF?!?!?
The short of it is that a student committed suicide by jumping off the top of a stairwell. The damage to said individual was so intense that the police thought he was shot and treated the incident as a possible homicide. However this was nearly two and half hours after the incident occurred. They then decided that the perpetrator might be still be in the building, locked it down, and searched everyone at gunpoint.

Just some thoughts.
