Red Team

I figured I'd spend today recovering and reading, but I'm glued to the computer checking up on Red Team and Red Team Too in the DARPA Grand Challenge.

If you are at the computer reading this, you should be checking the page obsessively, too.

eta Stanford pulled ahead in the last hour.

Actually, I am--three of my friends spent the summer working on our entry, Prospect 11. Even though Princeton got knocked out this morning, the fight for the finish is still really exciting.

Rooting for you guys!

You know the government wants to use their results to make robots that kill people? Sure, robots are cool, but I am against DARPA.

Yeah, I know; it's the competitive aspect I found addictive. It's also something CMU-related I can mention that my friends elsewhere might have read about in the news.

These bots are autonomous :-). You program and work them back in the bunker, and by the time they hit the field you don't "control" them at all. They stand alone and carry out what they're assigned to do. They're about as likely to turn on you as your canteen.

The same goes for civilian applications - the system has to be self-contained, if only for safety reasons.

Autonomous bots remove the threat of enemy cracking, which is their greatest strength.

Granted, sabatogue is always a threat, but no more with these bots than with anything else.
