[Fate.01]

He practically had to drag his legs out once the elevator door opens. It’s late and he’s exhausted after another long day of work. The twenty-foot distance from the elevator to his door seems so far, almost drained his last energy.

Maybe I overworked myself today, he sighed. But it came naturally; there was no meaning of overwork for him. Every day is almost the same routine. Wake up-work-work-eat-work-work-work-break-work-work-eat-work-home-work-sleep-wake up--- definitely the same routine.

However, something else happened last night, that well, doesn’t necessarily affecting his routine, but somehow, he feel… disturbed.

It was last night when he suddenly woke up with a feeling he was dreaming. But his dream doesn’t involve any image, just voices. Voices he was so sure doesn’t belong to him or anybody he’d know. And those voices are not some talking or laughing. It was voices of a guy and girl screaming at each other, some cursing, come crying, for at least for a few moments.

Well, of course he feel disturbed, when suddenly the emptiness of his neighbour was filled with the sound of living creature in it. He was so tired that he passed out almost immediately, before his head even hit the pillow. And he never had a dream, or maybe he was just too restless to even remember if he had a dream.

He tried to push those voices from his head as he focused himself to sleep again, but those voices keep on coming through his head.

It was on his 67th sheep counting, that those voices stop, with a dramatic sound effect of glass shattering and door slamming to conclude it. He fell asleep immediately afterwards.

He sighed again as he dragged himself, shaking his head, thinking finally he was over it, and thought, maybe he was hearing things.

At least I’m not seeing things, but the sight he was seeing as he walks to his apartment told him a different story.

Because honestly, a crying girl, is really something he does not want to see right now.

He stood dead at his track as he tried to understand the situation. “Ano-“ he began, clearing his throat, did not exactly know what to say at the moment.

The girl looks up from where she was sitting on the floor and stares at him with red eyes.

“I really don’t want to intrude you, but you’re on my way” he said politely.

“The space is big enough” she said, or at least trying to say but because of the heavy sobs it sounded ugly.

“Excuse me?”

The girl immediately stood up. “I said the space’s big enough” she said, staring at him as if challenging him to look back.

“I don’t get you” he had to answer.

“This walkway is big enough for you to walk by. There’s no need for me to move” she snapped.

“But---“

“I’m sure you can just walk pass me without actually asking me to move”

He was too startled to answer back. What have I done?

“Or are you pathetically just need to pick up on a crying girl?” she sarcastically said.

He sucked up every little breath that he could and again tried to understand the situation before finally spoke. “Well, excuse me, young lady---“

“Don’t young lady me” she snapped again. “Do you think you can just call me anything that you want?”

He couldn’t speak at all. Never in his life was he being scolded by someone he literally knew. He’s too a short tempered guy, but somehow, somehow---

He took a very deep breath, composing himself altogether before decided to speak again. “It’s 2 o’clock in the morning. I’m tired. I need my sleep. Now, if you could just move from my front door, so that I can enter to my apartment and went to my room to sleep on my bed, please” he calmly said, making sure she heard every words he just uttered.

It took her a good 10 seconds to reply back. “Your apartment?”

“Yes” he raised an eyebrow and pointed behind her. “2501. Last I check it’s my number, my door”

She slowly turned her head to his front door and gasp.

“Well?”

“Oh my god. I’m so sorry. I thought this is mine” she apologizes immediately.

Despite the smearing mascara runs down her face because of her tears, he can still see a deep read blush on her cheek.

She quickly runs to his next door.

He puts his key in the holes but didn’t turn it. Something hit his mind. “So, you’re the new neighbour?” he asked.

“Eh?”

“The last tenant moves out for almost 2 months. I haven’t heard anybody in that place until a few days ago. So, I’m guessing you’re staying here now?” he explains at her confused face.

“Ye-yeah”

He smiled to himself. So, I’m not hearing things.

“Well, welcome to the neighbourhood” he said, opening his own door.

“Thank you” is all she can manage.

“Ne?”

She turned to him “Hait?”

“Are you sure you’re okay?” he asks. “We might not know each other, but if you want--- need any help--- I mean, anything at all”

“I’m perfectly fine” she answered back without hesitating.

“Well, if you say so” he replied. “Good night, then” he smiled at her before closing his own door.

He threw himself on the sofa immediately once he was inside, kicks his shoes and loosened his necktie when his doorbell rings. He walks tiredly to answer the door and wonder silently as who could be at his door.

For the second time that night, he thought he was seeing things.

Because he can never imagine the same girl would be standing at his front door.

“Anything at all… right?” she awkwardly said.
