Witch's Broom Cookies

Just in time for Halloween, here's a fun cookie to make with kids!

Here's the basic recipe:

1/2cup packed brown sugar1/2cup butter, softened2tablespoons water1teaspoon vanilla1 1/2cups all-purpose flour1/8teaspoon salt10pretzel rods, about 8 1/2 inches long, cut crosswise in half3teaspoons shortening2/3cup semisweet chocolate chips1/2cup butterscotch

These are amazing! I will be making them soon myself. Just one question, what's shortening? And what would (if any) be a substitute? Can you "just" use butter?

Hmmm, shortening is like Crisco? Vegetable shortening. Butter doesn't work in this case, because butter keeps the chocolate soft, while the shortening helps the chocolate harden. I think it's entirely possible for these to turn out fine without shortening, though.
