Profile for Sumimura Yoshimori in
gargleblasted Fandom: Kekkaishi
Timeline: manga chapter 253
Age: 15 (third year of junior high school)
This was Yoshimori's profile upon joining
gargleblasted last year. A few details have changed as time has gone by.
~*Magical*~ abilities and strengths: Yoshimori is the 22nd kekkaishi (literally, "barrier master") of the Sumimura clan. In general, Kekkaishi protect the balance between humans and the supernatural. They protect the world of living humans by exorcising dangerous ghosts and demons, and they protect holy land, gods, and sources of energy from being tainted by human or hostile supernatural influences.
Yoshimori and his partner Tokine guard a plot of very powerful holy land called Karasumori. Ayakashi (demons, monsters, and evil spirits) try to absorb the spiritual power that Karasumori emits in order to become stronger and conquer other gods or harm humans. The kekkaishi's job at Karasumori is to fight against anyone trying to misuse the power of Karasumori using spiritual barriers and send the defeated entities to the afterlife. Kekkaishi utilize a technique called Hazama-ryu kekkai-jutsu, which makes use of various techniques controlled by incantation words and a mudra (hand position). Yoshimori's jutsu are described in detail
here.
At first in canon, Yoshimori and Tokine mostly fight against ghosts and demons trying to misuse Karasumori's spiritual power, but as the plot thickens, they find that someone mysterious is hunting and collecting the power of holy lands all over Japan (referred to as "shinyuchi-gari" or holy land hunting). Humans are also, by forbidden means, able to use the power of the gods to become immortal themselves. It seems that the Kekkaishi are not just for battling ayakashi at Karasumori to protect humans from ayakashi, but also to protect the gods from humans trying to misuse them; keeping the balance between humans and gods and making sure both stay in their proper places.
In general, the most frequently used part of kekkai-jutsu is the creation of kekkai, or barriers. With a quick series of verbal commands and gestures, Yoshimori can use his spiritual power to make a small barrier around his fingers (houi), toss it out around a target (jouso), lift it to create walls and close the target in a box (ketsu), and then collapse the kekkai, destroying the contents (metsu). Kekkaishi carry a shakujo, a special staff which has a ring in it. After destroying an ayakashi with a kekkai, the command tenketsu opens a door in the shakujo ring, and the demon is sucked out of the human world to prevent it from regenerating. Yoshimori calls his shakujo "Tenketsu" in canon.
A kekkai is like a box of light which is invisible to those people who do not have spiritual powers. It can be made large or tiny, flexible or rigid according to the user's will, ability, and frame of mind. In addition, a well-placed kekkai makes a good place to stand in mid-air. It can be controlled with the mind and dragged in a linear fashion to hit something or someone. A kekkai can be used as a defensive shield as well. However, if the user is not able to concentrate, the kekkai will be weak and sloppy, and a very powerful monster may be able to break out if the monster is much stronger spiritually than the kekkaishi performing the jutsu is.
At the point Yoshimori is taken from canon, he is in training to produce a technique called "musou" ("blank mind") in which his mind will be completely clear and neutral, uninfluenced or distracted by anything from the outside. When he achieves this perfect "musou" state of nothingness, he will be able to call forth a bunshin (part of himself) to be his partner. This bunshin can take any sort of shape, and he still does not know what it will be. The outcome might be dangerous if his heart is swayed too much by any one thing. Without the support of Shimano training him, or his grandpa looking out for him, or Kagemiya Sen watching over him, or Tokine or his brother to keep him in check, he might be in trouble.
Appearance: Yoshimori is a stocky boy of medium height. His hair can best be described as a black mop. He has pale skin, a big goofy smile and wide, expressive dark eyes. When he gets angry, upset, or embarrassed, you will know right away, because Yoshimori is terrible at hiding his moods. He trains very hard every day and as such, he has built a decent amount of muscle tone. He has always been on the reckless side, and nightly fighting with demons and monsters since he was a small child have resulted in an accumulation of battle scars on his person, even though he is only 15.
Yoshimori is usually seen wearing casual clothes when not at school. Comfort is what's most important to him. He dresses like a slob, favoring holey jeans, track pants and sweatshirts over anything else. When not on duty as a kekkaishi, he will be wearing white bandages around his right hand to hide the houin-- a black square mark on the palm of his hand, which is the proof that he is the legitimate successor to the Sumimura clan. While performing his duty as a kekkaishi, he is required to wear a black kimono and hakama marked with his family's crest, and purple arm guards. However, Yoshimori (being a stubborn kid) has added his own twists to his kekkaishi wear. He habitually refuses to wear the traditional straw sandals with his kekkaishi robes, and opts for running shoes instead for ease of movement. He also is usually wearing his backpack, in which he carries around first-aid items, snacks, food he's made for people, comic books, and other supplies.
Background/Personality:
Yoshimori is, to be brutally honest, a bit of a loser. His appearance is a little sloppy-- his hair is an absolute mop and he prefers wearing sweats and sneakers to anything else. He values practicality and efficiency over tradition, for instance, he insists on wearing sneakers instead of zori with his family's traditional kimono and hakama. In school he tended to sleep through or cut classes that didn't interest him.
The thing is is that Yoshimori has a secret. He is a student during the day just like other kids his age, but at night, he fights ayakashi (demons which are invisible to normal people). Together with his neighbor and rival/love interest Yukimura Tokine, Yoshimori patrols the grounds of Karasumori-- a site which emits a great deal of spiritual energy due to a mysterious object which is buried far below the earth (we are not told yet what that might be). Ayakashi are attracted by the spiritual energy the site gives off and come to feed on that power and become bigger and more powerful. As a kekkaishi and as the chosen successor of his clan, Yoshimori's duty is to pick off and exorcise those ayakashi before they absorb enough power to cause trouble in the human world.
Yoshimori has been working as a kekkaishi at night since a very young age, and he has never enjoyed it much. He would much rather be at home sleeping, or pursuing his hobby, baking desserts. However, a traumatic experience in which his partner Tokine was seriously injured protecting him has had a deep impact on his life. Yoshimori fears that if he does not get stronger, he will cause more pain and danger for the people around him. Because of this, he becomes fiercely motivated to work harder to become a better kekkaishi and protect his loved ones. In addition, a close friend of his is killed protecting Karasumori from evil forces who seek to use the dark power the land emits for no-good purposes. After losing his friend in a battle over control of Karasumori, Yoshimori has had enough. His goal is to find a way to seal whatever evil entity or god lies beneath the land, so that evil beings won't be attracted to the land and therefore won't trouble anyone anymore.
Yoshimori's ability to channel spiritual energy is wildly higher than the other kekkaishi in his family. Because of his pure and sincere nature, his kekkai and zekkai abilities are greatly enhanced by the will of spiritual beings around him. When he is in the domain of a tochi-gami (god or very strong spiritual being which has taken over an area of land as its domain/home), if the god lends Yoshimori power, his techniques can be amazingly strong if his protective feelings or anger is ignited. However, people often comment that Yoshimori's overly gentle and easygoing nature makes it very difficult for him to make really tough decisions. If he has his way, he wants to make sure no one gets hurt.
Yoshimori has a lot of energy but finds it difficult to channel. He hates thinking about difficult or complex issues, tending to act first and think later. If he can't figure out how to do something, he'll make up his own method-- for instance, when he is being instructed to knit a spirit barrier with his nen-shi (spirit thread) by winding the thread of energy around and around him in a spiral, he gets impatient with the tedious task and just spins in a circle as fast as he can, twirling like a retarded ballerina. He's stubborn. It's very hard to make him change his mind once it's set. He's clueless when it comes to girls and rather pure-minded (he's often shocked at his male classmates when he overhears them talking about boobs or sex). Yoshimori has a hard time talking about his personal feelings. He's had a major crush on his childhood friend Tokine as long as he can remember, but he's never been able to admit to himself that he has feelings for her.
His redeeming qualities (other than his cooking skills) are his honesty, creativity, and willingness to help and protect others. He is often accused by his clan members of being too naive and gentle, or for having a worldview that is too simple. He withholds judgement on others even to a fault, royally pissing off those around him who think he associates with dangerous people. His emotions are easily swayed by those in need. He has been called too pure, too soft, too stupid, and too nice by many people around him. He does not have much use for traditions that don't serve him well: he thinks that the older generations of his clan are complete idiots for holding onto traditions that don't make sense, such as the feud between the Sumimura and Yukimura families.
