The Hobbit - it's wonderful!

Well, wow, I saw The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey last night! Finally, after waiting two years for it! I know some of you will be seeing it this weekend (and I will be seeing it again this weekend, too, in 2D and in HFR3D again), and I mainly just want to say that I think it is wonderful. It was great to revisit Middle-earth. Martin Freeman is ( Read more... )

The constant rollercoaster from humor to pathos to fear in the "Riddles in the Dark" scene blew me away. A very careful line to walk there, and it was brilliant. It couldn't have been better.

Unfortunately, as someone who couldn't wait for Radagast because of Tolkien, I agree with your disappointment there, though for different reasons. I'd rather have seen him not done at all than done badly. (Jackson's fault there, not McCoy's.)

Wasn't seeing Holm's Bilbo considering the portrait of Freeman's Bilbo amazing? It gave me cold chills and tears in my eyes at the same time.

Warmly agree with this. I found the film great fun. For me, PJ got the tone right-- it felt very true to the lighter tone of the hobbit, with much more action of course, but it didn't detract or bewilder the way his manufactured scenes in TTT especially did.

His dialog improved immensely this time around, and I suspect a great deal of it is because he gave himself room to quote directly from the book, rather than summarizing and switching lines between characters.

It was lovely good fun and I'll be seeing it again. :)

I am glad that you liked it! I saw it 2 more times yesterday. :) Might post more thoughts (and some pics of a fun Hobbit exhibit I also saw last night). (BTW, now that I can compare, I prefer the HFR 3D version to the 2D version, but learned it is a good idea to sit dead center... it made a difference in the 2 times I saw it in HFR 3D.)
