Screw that

I am in a very happy place right now in my personal life... but I am so mad about today's Supreme Court decision on voting that I could spit nails.

I'm horrified by it.

No surprise, but damn, damn, damn them. What is really horrifying is that the conservatives already probably have a whole raft of new schemes ready to implement that we couldn't even conceive of in our worst nightmares.

I call it "enabling racism." The Supreme Court struck down a central portion of the Voting Rights Act, ending the practice in which some states with a history of racial discrimination must receive clearance from the federal government before changing voting laws. This means that states like Texas, which have a history of racist practices with regard to providing equal access to polling places, no longer have to obtain Federal preapproval before changing their practices. It's an utter travesty, a terrible blow to basic civil rights.

When I was younger, I used to think we were getting somewhere. Now I realize that it is three steps forward, at least two steps back. There are a few SCOTUS members that couldn't have a heart attack fast enough to please me. So sad to have to say that, but there you are.

Agreed. But I think maybe two steps forward and three steps back on many issues. :(

Well, today thankfully we had the great news that they struck down the anti-gay Defense of Marriage Act (yay!) but yesterday's decision just opens the door for even more racially-motivated voter suppression, when there is already too much of that happening. Aggrgh.
