It astonishes me that all these records still exist: millions of lives and millions upon millions of military actions: all documented on fragile, yellowing scraps of paper that will be illegible and irrecoverable in another seventy years.
And every now and again we are reminded that these meandering typescripts and scrawls of signatures were lives, and people, as real as us today.
