Tonight my channel hopping encountered a 1982 film, “The Year of Living Dangerously”, concerning the rebellion in Jakarta in 1965 when General Sukarno was pushed out - to be succeeded by another General, Soeharto, who was the corrupt President from 1997-1998. As usual, your wisdom and perspective is inspiring. This post is especially pertinent right now in light of the recent uprising in Burma. Suppression and terror can only persist for so long--yet I often feel distressed that their presence is always with us in human society, though perhaps less than it was 100 or 1000 years ago.

Yesterday I went to a presentation by Naomi Klein to a paked house - concerning her new book "The Shock Doctrine". She's a tough 'lefty' who loves to trash Milton Friedman's unfettered free-market dogma ... but, in person, is quite hopeful about the future, despite the struggles around the world.
