Tonight my channel hopping encountered a 1982 film, “The Year of Living Dangerously”, concerning the rebellion in Jakarta in 1965 when General Sukarno was pushed out - to be succeeded by another General, Soeharto, who was the corrupt President from 1997-1998. The film covered Sukarno’s fall from power - interesting to me because I was in Jakarta

As usual, your wisdom and perspective is inspiring. This post is especially pertinent right now in light of the recent uprising in Burma. Suppression and terror can only persist for so long--yet I often feel distressed that their presence is always with us in human society, though perhaps less than it was 100 or 1000 years ago.

Yesterday I went to a presentation by Naomi Klein to a paked house - concerning her new book "The Shock Doctrine". She's a tough 'lefty' who loves to trash Milton Friedman's unfettered free-market dogma ... but, in person, is quite hopeful about the future, despite the struggles around the world.
