Goddamn! I just racked up another year! Most people my age just hum and hope nobody notices - but not me. I like my age although it surprises me and it's hard to believe I'm 69. (No smartass comments about the digits, s'il vous plait

This may be a naive question, but what exactly does it mean to present a paper at a conference? Is it just presenting it to other people in the field who might be interested? Or is this a formal part of having it published in an academic journal?

In this case, a bit of both. Sometimes it's just a matter of presenting (orally and in paper form) a 'paper' (essay, perhaps) and sometimes, as in this NEASECS conference in Salem, Mass, the 7 or 8 papers are intended to be published somewhere. When I find out more, I'll let you know.
I have every expectation that you will be an accomlished 'paper-giving' academic (and much more!) some day. Just count the number of responders you already get! It seems you are the 'new Kieran'.

I'd be really interested to see how you use Powerpoint. I'll try to remember the next time I come up to Vancouver. :-)

A young lady studying in Belarus contacted me a couple of weeks ago after stumbling upon a reference to me in some journal - she's doing her thesis on Chatterton and the libraries in Minsk are devoid of anything useful. So I've been pipelining her with his story, image, etc.
As to PowerPoint, I always use it as a diagrammatic tool - not the 'point highlight' crap that is so numbing.
Great to hear about your new residence!!

Happy Easter to you and your family.

How about lunch this Saturday - rain or shine? I'll make sure to bring my laptop so that we can do Powerpoint Venn Diagrams and flow charts with float-in Chattertons...
Happy Returns Ol' Bean!

But, alas, Saturday is out. Somewhere back there I think I either commented or e-mailed that Sandra and I are off to Seattle sometime tomorrow (Thursday) to attend Jim Stark's wedding on Saturday - and for some upkeep on le bateau. Damn - if you'd got here today, I could have used your youth & energy to spiff up the @#$%^&* boat.
We'll be getting back to Van sometime on Sunday afternoon - THEN the oyster stew and/or Starbucks. YES.
You'll probably feel a bit confused/deflated/disorganized for a few days - I always did after 'returning' from a time away in far off places. But it passes quickly if you get re-focused quickly on the 'new stuff'.
