Well, tonight was fun. I was chatting with my niece (who lives in Alaska) on IM and having a great chat btw....but the girls kept bugging me to play Halo with them. (I know that they just wanted good target practice). So I said goodbye to my niece and played Halo (XBox) with the girls. Fortunately for me, they picked the ice world where there were ( Read more... )

From http://www.seasite.niu.edu/Tagalog/Tagalog_Default_files/Philippine_Culture/halo_halo.htm

Halo-halo (from "halo" = mix) is a favorite Filipino dessert or snack. It is basically a mixture of sweet preserved beans(red beans, chick peas), coconut meat (macapuno), jackfruit (langka), pounded dried rice (pinipig), sweet yam (ube), cream flan (leche flan), shreds of sweetened plantain (saba), filled with crushed ice, milk (or coconut milk) and topped with ice cream. The halo-halo basically is sweet, creamy, and a filling dessert.

This Filipino concoction is quite popular during the hot summer months (March-June) in the country, just as ice cream is. It is usually served in tall, clear glasses that show its colorful contents that tempt one's taste buds. One's thirst is even made worse by the perspiring ice-filled glass, and the melting ice cream on top.

Mmmmmmmm....sounds yummy! I wonder how they turned it into a "shoot 'em" game on XBox...LOL.

I looked at the recipe, didn't recognize some of the fruits used in making Halo--macapunoand--coconut meat & Langka--jackfruit,also saba--plantain...guess you could probably substitute different fruits. Have you ever eaten Halo?

Yes - it did not look so good to me at the time but I was ignorant. You should try it sometime. Go to a Filipino restaurant and see if they will make some for you.

Sorry your toe hurts :-(

I will have to see if there's a Filipino restaurant in our local area...otherwise I will try making it sometime--doesn't look too hard if I can just figure out what jackfruit is...I think Plantain are a form of banana--I've seen them in the commissary before.

I'll post some pictures of jackfruit in an update...don't know that I've ever seen it...

Thanks about the toe...it's still really black and blue and sore, but it's feeling better...now it only hurts when someone bangs it :o)
