Because I'm hosting a manga icon battle, I thought it would be great to get into the spirit of things by creating an inspiration post featuring icons that use manga scans in creative ways.

ICONNING WITH MANGA
Many assume that using manga as the starting point of an icon requires ( Read more... )

this is such a wonderful inspiration post!
People mostly aren't comfortable working with manga scans, hopefully this post will give everyone the courage to work on manga scans again \o/

Aw, thanks. I'm really glad you like it.
Manga coloring was huge awhile back, but it's sort of been lost again. Perhaps partly because it's viewed as something you need to take a lot of time to create?
My hope with this post was to break it down for people so that it seems less intimidating XD

It does take a lot of time and maybe some people aren't just confident enough to color manga scans and posting it? It's like not all people could reach high level with manga coloring, sometimes it's intimidating ;__;
I hope so, it's great to have it as a challenge once in a while, I'll probably need to bookmark this post XD

I've learned that for iconmaking I can get away with just cropping my lines and coloring something at icon-size (or 300x300 in my case) rather than spending a lot of time coloring a full panel. It also requires a little less detail work depending on the crop~

It's certainly hard to put yourself out there when manga coloring geniuses are actively posting their works of art... but if you think about it, it's not that much different from icon making. Sharing, getting feedback, and making improvements is part of the fun.

Also, if it's any help to any newbies out there, nobody's here to bash you! Every time I've gone to the ~elite~ coloring people for feedback or advice they've been nothing but helpful and super encouraging.

Manga scans are so difficult for me to work with, but I think this post is absolutely great and now I really want to experiment!

Once I'll find the right scan, I'm joining the battle...

This is such an informative and inspirational post! I've never made icons from manga, but after reading this post I'm interested in taking a shot at it.

I'm so happy to hear that~ Iconning from manga is a great way to give some lesser-appreciated series some love, especially a series that hasen't been made into an anime (yet).
