I've lived in Ithaca since the summer of 2005, but I still strongly identify as a Rhode Islander. So imagine how surreal it is to see your hometown flooded out on CNN, and to see all the landmarks from your youth submerged in 3 feet of water. And that lazy little chemical filled river that you used to drive or walk by 5 times a day is now swallowing half the state.
My parents are fine. Their house is within walking distance of the Pawtuxet River, but they are uphill from it so I don't think they even got any water in their basement. As far as I know, they haven't been told not to flush the toilet or shower. Wednesday morning my mother told me my sister Robin had a little water in her basement, but she is a fairly safe distance from the river. So my family has been incredibly lucky. Look at some of the flooding that's mere minutes away from them:
Rhodes on the Pawtuxet, a 2 minute walk down the street from my parents' house. Those woods are where I used to go be a rebellious teenager.
The Pawtuxet river flowing under the bridge at Pawtuxet Village. Far stronger rapids than its usual. Also within walking distance of my parents' house.
The other side of the bridge. Yet another location of my teenage indiscretions.
The supermarket my parents frequent.
The Warwick Mall, where most major retailing is done in my parents' neck of the woods. Also where I usually end up running into or seeing at least 5 people from high school whenever I go in.
Inside the Warwick Mall. A sad sight.
