hypercarnivore CHARACTER
✧ NAME: Ceri Weaver
✧ SERIES: Pokemon (OC)
✧ HISTORY: Outside of the many regions in the Pokeverse is one small, island, which can only really be described as a meteorological clusterfuck with parts of the island divided into climate zones. The strange climate allows almost every species of Pokemon to live there, and due to the fierce competition from the sheer numbers they tend to be more vicious. Omega Island exists as its own separate league for trainers who want something a step above to further hone themselves, only allowing entry to trainers with at least one badge from another region.
Social status on the island is determined by the number of badges you have, and badges aren’t easy to earn on Omega where Gym Leaders are on the level of other regions’ Elite Four, and the Elite Four members are individually on par with a Champion from another region. More than just strength, trainers have to be tactically sound. Due to the vast variety of Pokemon, both wild and trained on the island, type specialization is incredibly difficult to pull off. Instead, the Gym Leaders specialize in certain strategies.
And now with that bit of info done with, let’s move on to Ceri.
Ceri is, bluntly put, something of a mistake. After a series of events that lead to his mother being knocked up with him and his father long since gone, she decided to try to make the best of the situation and settled down in Hearthome City. An accomplished trainer, she turned to Pokemon Contests as a way to bring in income, along with various side jobs to supplement this.
And so, Ceri grew up surrounded by the most adorable and pretty Pokemon. He helped his mother groom them and make the contest accessories they wore, and since she was prone to coming home late Ceri quickly learnt how to manage the household in her absence. He was given a Cottonee as a gift before he started school, and she ended up being well-loved because she was his very own Pokemon!
So well-loved that once beginning trainer lessons started in class, he’d often refuse to let her fight. The fact he was also a big baby didn’t win him any points with his classmates either, other than as an incredibly easy target for bullies. Unsurprisingly, he got bullied a lot. One day, when he was being ganged up on by some bigger classmates (again), he was rescued by one of the girls who proceeded to soundly beat them up. And so began Ceri’s friendship with Idris, and they quickly became inseparable.
Eventually they were 16 and earned their trainer licenses. Ceri, still kind of a spineless wimp, didn’t want to start on his journey without Idris, and after a bit of talking they decided they’d stick together up to a certain point. He didn’t really want to do this, but he figured he had to...depend on her less eventually, because it wasn’t fair to her. After travelling around (and gaining more experience on the way-- especially in double battles) for a few months together, they parted ways at Canalave City.
Ceri travelled to Hoenn, where he took on the gyms in an uphill struggle. No longer able to rely on someone else’s firepower, Ceri had to compensate for his team of small Pokemon through other strategies. It was very satisfying when he actually won battles and saw his little babies grow stronger, but after a while it felt terribly lonely without Idris around. In less than a year, he finally couldn’t stand it anymore and went to look for her.
After some more time honing their skills together, they caught wind of Omega Island and decided to set out. There, they quickly climbed through the ranks, having an advantage over some of the other new arrivals, collecting badges and upgrading their status. The town they ended up staying it had been attacked by wild pokemon one night, and there was a rush to try to drive them off quickly and prevent any further damage. Idris and Ceri took control of the situation, working together for the next few hours and instructing others on what to attack where, who to use first, always always keep your partner at your back, and you at his, etc. There was more property damage than any of them had bargained for, but fortunately nobody had died or been injured too badly in the struggle. As impressed as they were, the town offered the pair a Gym Leader position-- for the both of them.
Recently the Shuttle Corporation, which mainly develops tools for trainers, held an island-wide tournament promoting their latest product, the Legend Ball. In the aftermath of the final round of the tournament, Shuttle revealed themselves to be Team Rocket and took advantage of all the exhausted Trainers and Pokemon, stealing the latter. Since the Gym Leaders and Elite Four were ineligible for the tournament, they’re pretty much the only trainers with their original teams left on the island.
So Ceri’s basically been doing clean-up and trying to help, until he found himself in Promenade.
✧ TIMELINE: End of history, about two weeks after the tournament.
✧ PERSONALITY: Ceri is one of those people you don’t expect to be a gym leader, because he gives the impression of being less-than-competent. In a nutshell, he’s this shamelessly sentimental sappy guy who is also a complete sissy. Kind of the type of kid you know got bullied in school. To be fair, this assessment is almost entirely correct.
He’s friendly and by all means a nice person, if a little slow in the head. Or…very slow in the head. But his enthusiasm for his work and helping people makes up for it! Probably. He genuinely tries his best in everything he does, and hates to disappoint people although he knows a lot of them don’t expect much of him. The problem is he’s really emotional and kind of sappy; everyone’s going to know what he’s feeling no matter how hard he tries to hide it. Happy? He’d be grinning like an idiot. Upset? He may or may not be crying. He’s hideously difficult to anger because that implies having the mental faculties to take offense to anything most of the time, which also means he’s pretty easy-going if easy to embarrass or squirm.
He never really seems to stop moving, talking or otherwise doing something, and while he isn’t overly hyper he can be difficult to keep up with when he’s in a particularly good mood. A lot of his free time is spent doing mundane activities like baking and doing the laundry, and he rarely passes up any excuse to sew or knit something. He tends to mother at people without realizing it, like telling them to comb their hair or eat their vegetables or other such things. Ceri also has this glaring weakness for all things cute and adorable, often getting distracted by them even if it’s something he should be fighting. He’s pretty much as unmanly as it gets.
Now, he’s really not all that bright for most of the part, but he’s smarter than he appears to be. Having a team that mostly consists of weaker Pokemon, or ones that easily find themselves at a disadvantage, he’s had to come up with ways to maximize what they can do and make the best of their abilities. Although his gym’s theme is officially double battles, he employs a lot of annoyance and stalling strategies, usually to complement a partner who has more raw firepower than he does. He can be smart! Unfortunately, unless you’re putting it in terms of Pokemon and strategy, you probably won’t see it much.
Ceri is kind of co-dependent on his best friend, Idris, having more or less been glued to her since they were 7. It not so bad that he can’t function on a daily basis without her, but past a certain point he’s likely to just feel terribly lonely and his overall mood and drive will nosedive eventually. When he forms attachments he can get very attached, being the sentimental sap he is, but none will ever match the level of attachment he has for her and his Pokemon.
Speaking of which, Ceri is one of those people who fully believes in the bond between people and Pokemon and each other!! He likes seeing people get along with each other and Pokemon. To say he adores his Pokemon is putting it mildly; he treats them rather like they’re his children, especially since he’s had all of them for years and has raised them from when they were tiny pre-evolutions. Harming them (or Idris) is the only way to get anything like fury out of him, which is pretty much the only indicator that somewhere deep down, he might be a teeny tiny bit off-balance. With the power of derp and love, he will strangle the perpetrator, or at least try.
✧ ABILITIES/POWERS: Ceri is a Pokemon trainer, and has a
team of six. He also has awesome sewing, cooking, baking and cleaning skills, but otherwise he's just your average human.
✧ TIME OF ARRIVAL: Day
✧ MASK DESIGN: He already wears one! Just a red strip of cloth.
✧ PLACE OF SOLACE: His gym.
SAMPLES
✧ FIRST PERSON:
Here ✧ THIRD PERSON: The thing about waking up in a city of dreams was that...well, waking up in a city of dreams. It kind of seemed like a contradiction, all things considered, how does that work when dreams were something that happened while you sleep? Ceri had spent a lot of time trying to wrap his mind around the concept. His brain quitted once the logic started going all wheel-shaped and went nowhere.
But it wasn't all the bad! It was a pretty city. With some strange rules, admittedly, but he already wore a mask all the time anyway and not talking at night wasn't all that difficult to get used to (mind-speak thing was another story, but adapt adapt adapt). The people were generally nice, and there were people from other worlds too! Not that he really got it, but it still meant different places and it was interesting to hear about where they were from. Like exchanging travel stories, only a lot more surreal.
(The idea of a world without Pokemon still boggled -- scared -- him, a little but thems the breaks.)
It was only too bad Idris wasn't there, though. She could use the experience. More people! And the dream city wasn't so bad, though he still preferred to make things himself than dream it up. The gym was there too, and all the stuff inside and the berry trees at the back, so it was all good. At least there was something from home with him.
...He did wonder whether he could dream up TMs, though. Would it even work? Not the dreaming bit, but the TM itself. Maybe if he thought hard enough, it would. This was a dream after all, right? Just a test, since he already had plenty of TM27 in the gym. Light-coloured disc, love love love Pokemon return the love --
He blinked, and the disc was right there in his hand the next moment. He stared for a few seconds, turned it around in his hands, squeezed a little to make it was solid. ...Wow. Wow! It worked! Yes!
...He wondered if it was possible to create a TM that didn't really exist. Ice Punch was so difficult it get and it was so useful...
✧ ORIGINAL CHARACTER QUESTION: First of all? Freak out when he’s told it’s a dream world because holy shit what. Once he calms down he will very happily want to go explore and get to know people, at least until he starts getting homesick, which will probably take a while. Oh, and he will gush about his Pokemon at anyone. Anyone.
