Personally, I've always bought into the idea that there is always someone stronger, smarter, and generally better than you. So don't get too cocky.
I think certain people can try and try as hard as they possibly can and still not do what others have done.
I don't think I'm one of those people. I choose not to work to my limit because I don't want to live that way; haggard, running on energy drinks and coffee, feeling validation in successes in the academic and other fields. I go more for the self-validation, spiritual enlightenment contemplation thing.
I also think it's partially luck; being in the right place at the right time.

grace, you have nothing to prove. if you're not secure with who you are, no ivy league school will make you happy with yourself.
