That was an incredible read, thanks for taking the time to post! It sounds like we're in the same position (employed but seeking better?) and I think organizing myself like this will take so much of the pressure off. Job hunting in daunting!
Yeah, I'm employed and happy but looking for better -- especially because my job is physically moving to a less advantageous location (ugh).
Also this is 100% RANDOM-ASS but you wrote Cool Blue Reason, didn't you? It's my go-to Tony/JARVIS and the fic I always bust out to prove to people that tentacle sex can be awesome in the right hands. :D
LOL that was me! Thank you! :D Tony is my favourite hedonist, and Ponderosa totally deserves some credit for that one, because I'm pretty sure it came out of a chat with her about all the possible ways Tony could bang his AI. Because he would.
And now fortified with this double-whammy of coolness, I job hunt!
Thank you for sharing this! I'm planning to start looking for a new job early next year and will definitely be using this post as a reference. I've never applied for work while working full time, so this was especially helpful for me. Speaking of which, question: How did you handle the issue of references? Did your current employer know you were looking for other jobs? I'm a little worried about this, since I definitely don't want to quit my job before I get a new one locked down, but I also don't have any references apart from my current job :S
A lot depends on your situation, with regard to references. In the jobs I'm applying for, reference checks are the LAST thing done before the contract is signed, so it isn't an issue for me. The only reason I would tell certain people I work with is if I already had an offer on the table. Also, many applications say "may we contact this person?" and you can check "no".
You can also tell the person you're listing without telling "your employer" sometimes. I told a woman who still works at the same company as me but no longer works directly with me, so that she could be a reference.
If you are reasonably fresh from school, you can list people who supervised you in work-study jobs, or your college advisor. You can list coworkers who aren't your supervisor, and you can also list supervisors at any volunteer jobs you do in your spare time.
