Lu Han’s breath hung frozen before him and his footsteps crunched beneath him, the sound ringing through the frozen taiga. There was no moon out tonight, and the stars twinkled brightly above him in the velvet black sky, framed by the far-reaching branches of the spruce and fir forest he walked through. He was at ease, eyes closed and a small smile on his face as he listened to the sounds of the taiga around him - an owl hooting overhead, the soft scarper of a weasel heading back to its den, a lone raccoon foraging through the undergrowth, his own beating heart. He was on his way back into town, a rifle slung over his left shoulder and the results of today’s trappings- a couple hares- slung over his right. It was bitterly cold, but the thought of home kept him warm, where Yixing would have a fire going and a hot cup of tea ready.
Sehun smelled Lu Han before he heard him, and heard Lu Han before he saw him. The smell stood out, light and sweet amongst the heavy musky smells of the taiga around them. The footsteps matched the scent, soft and careful. Perfectly audible to Sehun’s ears, but much quieter than those of the last one Sehun had lured in. The last one had been all dark hair and copper skin, full of an arrogant confidence that didn’t belong in the taiga. Nonetheless, he had succumbed to Sehun’s charms in the end. No one refused Sehun when he asked for a dance, and this one wouldn’t either.
Lu Han didn’t know what it was that made him stop and suddenly change direction. All he knew was that suddenly he felt a strange connection, almost a sense of familiarity, to some presence deep amongst the trees. It was as if someone had wrapped his heart up with a thin line of thread and was gently tugging it towards them. He hesitated only a moment before veering off-course. The night was oddly quiet now; gone were the sounds of the owl and weasel and racoon he had heard earlier. Lu Han wasn’t sure if they had truly retreated from this part of the taiga, or if he was too wrapped up in this invisible connection to notice them. The thread led him towards a clearing framed by thick tree trunks and coniferous needles, snow fresh and untouched on the ground. That’s when he saw him.
Sehun didn’t lose a moment in making his move. The moment his own amber eyes met Lu Han’s deer-like chocolate brown ones, he pounced, pushing Lu Han down on to a bed of snow. The boy offered no resistance at all, gently crumpling backwards to look up at Sehun on top of him, one gigantic paw landing on either side of his shoulders. Lu Han understood now what that connection had been and where that thread had led him. In that moment Sehun saw acceptance in the boy’s eyes. Sehun growled softly, the sound almost coming out as a purr. This one knew the law of the taiga. The tiger would always top.
Back in their cabin, Yixing waited as the fire died out and cup of tea turned cold.
