I was going to write a post about how The Hunger Games (book, film) is a ripoff of Battle Royale (book, film). But plenty of people have gotten there before me, and as one critic points out, the quality of the later work is a different topic than whether or not it was influenced by the earlier work. I think what's annoying is the complete media saturation of hunger games--even NPR is in on it, and all my coworkers seem to have seen it over the weekend. I just wish some of the hype would acknowledge Battle Royale, since it was there first, so hunger games is not new territory. The stories should be compared--if there's anything to be learned from the themes explored, they both should get attention.
