COUNCIL - VOL 2

Aug 20, 2008 11:10

As I said a little while ago, I'd gladly arrange an election if the people in Luceti would think a city council would be something we need. I do believe it would help us work as a community better, help us turn this city safer and better organized ( Read more... )

Thank you for reviving and continuing to pursue this, Yutaka. It's a very difficult task, dredging up much interest around here.

I just hope some kind of break through will happen before the communal stress will break the proverbial spine of us. I hope you're willing to step up as a candidate, Albert. The council would need at least one of you, you know. Not only because of your wits, either.

Quite a way to press the point.

I will speak further on the matter with Caesar, but you may consider me a candidate. We have considered different arrangements of a council depending on the final number we wish to install.

Additionally, I would like to speak with you about your research on the barrier.

I know! I'm sorry, Albert, if it's not very convenient for you. But it is my firm opinion based on observations on this community.

Sounds good. I hope someone else could present the formation of the council. It might seem a little one sided if I'll be the one figuring that out and then arranging the election. To avoid later problems we should try to act as a community in any case.

Of course! Would you like to come over for a cup of tea?

My opinion remains the same as before. Should need be, I'm willing to step up as a candidate.

Voting for a mayor would be a foolish thing to do. The entire community would depend on one person, who is just as vulnerable to the Malnosso as anyone else.

Thank you! It seems such a promising list at the moment! I'm so excited! ♥

I must say I agree completely. Perhaps one day the council could decide one person to lead if there is a major crisis situation but otherwise I don't see any reason for it. However, I'm curious to know what the people of Luceti as a whole think about it.

Of course. Creating a council is pointless without the majority's consent.

That indeed it is.

This council idea has been intriguing me for quite some time. I believe it is something we should definitely turn into reality, for the sake of the entire village.

How to arrange the election remains a difficult question. I suppose it depends on how many members the council should ultimately have.

Yes! It might seem like useless effort at first, but I trust that the people we'd pick for such a position would try their best to make it worth the while.

Should you have any suggestions? I'm thinking simply naming the candidates, ask them to prepare public speeches about what they value and then people would vote. I think it sounds simple enough to work. Then we'll hand over voting forms, pieces of paper where you write your name and the name of the candidate and drop it into a box. Then I'll count the votes and that's about it. Please, let me know if you disagree.

It sounds like a fool-proof way to elect the candidates. However, how can you be certain the majority of the citizens will vote? If the general apathy continues, some might not even be bothered to leave their houses for the voting stage.

With that I can't help. It's unfortunate. I could take the voting to their doorstep as well, but I think that would cause a lot more suspicion on me, as well as the whole procedure in general. The only thing we can do is to make it a big thing. We can talk about it constantly, post about it, sing about it, draw about it, anything that will get the rest of the community's attention. I can't really come up with another way to go about it. You can't force them to take an action after all.

The whole idea is flawed.

I'm sorry you find it so. Is there anything that could do to help it improve, you think?

I've already stated this here, but you really should consider any potential problems that come with a government.

I'm aware of such problems. Unfortunately I don't think any government ever has enjoyed the full support of the whole nation. That is how people are, free will will work in curious ways. But we have to reach for some sort of stability. If you don't think council is the answer, please do fill in the blanks. I'm more than happy to receive suggestions how to better the idea of a centralized leadership.

Mello?

[a pause only to be followed by soft chuckle that clearly shows his genuine amusement]

Well, at least he'll make this world a little more fun...I wouldn't know about the safe part though.

Unfortunately I can't say I know the person in question. If he's not fitting for the job, I'd hope he'll refuse or won't be voted in that case. How about yourself? Are you interested in stepping up as a candidate?

Oh, believe me Mello is interesting enough and he's intelligent. Sadly, I don't think he cares too much about the rest of us.

[pause]

Me? [chuckles] Even if I have enough experience, I don't think this kind of council would fit me. Although I know how to be diplomatic, I'm afraid that my way of seeing things might be a bit more harsher than what many would like.

Besides having been part of a vampire council, I see things differently than others. Besides I don't think anyone would appreciate someone who's known to choose to fight instead of talking things over when the time comes.

Ah, that is unfortunate. I must say I hope a person who does not have the public interest as their priority would not be elected. It would only cause more trouble in a situation like this.

Hm. I don't think it's the point of electing a council that will agree about everything. But if you don't think you would be good for the job, I suppose you should not nominate yourself.
