Supernatural 8.20

Apr 27, 2013 10:52

I have been hanging on by my fingernails to Supernatural. I just stopped watching at about 8.14 - couldn't summon the interest. I think I disliked Sam so utterly by that point that it just soured the whole thing. I took a break of about six weeks, during which time I immersed myself in all things Justified/Jacob Pitts-ish, and kept dutifully ( Read more... )

I was about to pull the plug too, but the ep with grandpa Winchester and the MoL turned me around. I'm so glad that they are letting Thompson write from time to time. Whenever Bob Singer's wife does an ep, canon and characterization both go out of the window.

Who is Bob Singer's wife?

I liked the MoL thing, it was a bold choice, but then I was being let down too often by carelessness. Did you like 8.20?

I loved everything about 8:20. I do like Charlie. I loved that Sam got to push back against Dean's attempts to keep him out of the action. I loved that Dean actually let go of his fears and finally acknowledged Sam's choices, and I loved the dialogue all the way through. I love that Thompson consistently has Dean doing research and actually identifying the big bad. He isn't as dumb as a box of rocks the way some of the writers seem to have decided. I love that he's perceptive enough in this episode to realize what is keeping Charlie in her dream and then apply it to himself. Let's face it; I love Dean ( ... )

There has been a lot of sloppy writing that has annoyed, but this was perfect Dean. It was a great episode.

You're absolutely right, it was just perfect Dean, wasn't it? It reminded me of his best big brotherly moments in S1 and 2. And I thought at first I would only be saying that about Dean and his relationship with Charlie - but then came that hug...

Everything you just said goes for me three, only ... I haven't seen 8x20, and I wasn't planning on watching. But since you enjoyed it so much, and since I covet your brain so highly, I too will give it a chance.

I have LOVED SPN for ages. AGES. I'm a serial monogamist when it comes to fandom. I get super intense about a fandom for two to three years, then suddenly I'm just as crazy intense about the next one. SPN is the very first one I've stuck with for longer than three years.

And the thing is, even though this is year eight for me, if the writing quality was still high, I would be as desperately in love and obsessive about SPN as I was way back in season one. I truly would. It's taken A LOT OF CRAP to push me towards divorce. And now that I'm there (an eensy past 'there', actually), I'm not sure what it will take to reel me back in.

A extended scene with shirtless Dean bathed in loving, golden lighting? Well. Fine. I'm shallow! But yes, this would help.

But also, DECENT WRITING. Consistent writing. Holy fuck ( ... )

Oh, gosh, I hear you. I, too, have never understood how someone can dabble in multiple fandoms at the same time. I know many people do, but I just can't. When I'm in love I'm obsessed, consumed, and I love it ( ... )

The sloppy writing is inexcusable. The MoL and the golem episode really got things rolling. I really wanted to like the dog episode, but I've kinda forgotten it. Pac Man fever was so good I love the show again. It's like being in a dying relationship that has a few good days that make you have Hope again. I can't let the show go.

Yes, I really did like the golem ep. It was interesting, and original. And I don't want to let show go, either. This ep fanned the dying embers; maybe there's enough spark there to keep us going a little longer.

Your post is giving me hope.

I'm in much the same situation, in that I've kept downloading the episodes but haven't watched for weeks and weeks. The ratio of annoyance : enjoyment had reached the point where I needed to take a break. However I've seen quite a lot of positive comments about Pac Man Fever, so um, cautiously optimistic :)

I hope you enjoy it! As I said above, it largely depends on your liking for Charlie - but it's also very smartly writen, and the emotion is real, and earned, and rather gorgeous. The very last scene had me tear up a bit, and it's been a while since *that* happened. (I like your comment the annoyance: enjoyment ratio. Yes.)

let's hope for more good things, shall we? Because apart from anything else, I don't want Jesnen spinning his wheels in dross when he could be out there making more and better stuff. And I don't want them to wreck our memories.
