Too big for my heart; my five most powerfully affecting moments on fictional TV

Sep 08, 2013 11:45

I need something to distract me this morning, so I got thinking about the five fictional scenes on TV that really knocked my socks off. Well, why not? There are plenty of sporting moments, because I do like watching a lot of sport - Steve Waugh's 100 at the SCG, Sally Pearson winning gold at the Olympics, Makybe Diba's third Melbourne Cup, Sydney ( Read more... )

The election results are appalling, for all the reasons you mentioned. I'm baffled and depressed.

However, in the interests of distraction: the scene in The Walking Dead where Carol's daughter emerges from the barn left me genuinely shocked (in a good way). It completely challenged the expectation of a happy outcome.

Oh,yes! TWD is a relentlessly grim series (I'm halfway through S3) and seems to set out to confound the viewer's ideas of cosy viewing. That said, there are still moments that genuinely shock. Carl getting shot, after the moment of grace with the deer, was another. I appreciate the series' refusal to pander, while admitting that it's bloody tough viewing.

1,2,and 5 are on my list as well! I also have Magnum PI in the episode "Did you see the sunrise?" when he shot the Russian. It was so shocking at the time. And when Sam got stabbed in the back on Supernatural that killed me. And Abandon all Hope of SPN. That I still cry over!

I rememebr Magnum PI, of course (and how surprised I was that Higgins (? Butler bloke) was actually a real lfie Texan! But I don't remember seeing him shoot someone. Given the sort of jokey tone of the show, anything particualrly harsh would jolt a viewer or two.

Sam getting stabbed shocked me, but I guess it's not about shock per se, but being emotionally moved - and for that, it would be Dean hugging him afterwards, all the "I got ya"s, the look on his face as Sam slumps in his arms.

Abandon all hope - yes. Definitely. I have yet to make it through a viewing of that without bawling my eyes out. I should have put that one in. (But then, I could have filled all five with Supe moments).

Thank you! But which would be your emotional moments? I'm guessing lots of Eleventy in there... *g*

Oh yes!! Most of The God Complex comes to mind...and The Big Bang ending ('was it worth it?' 'Shut up, of course it was') and...when he kisses River goodbye in the 7th series finale. I don't even SHIP them, but...that was so lovely.

Actually just anything with Matt Smith. And his Face. And his Talent. And those LEGS...

*Faints*

I don't know these!!! I have got to get the series. Mind you, I hate the fact that Dr Who regularly asks full series price for half season - that shits me. I can't afford that. I'll have to wait until it comes out in one package. (Unless Small pesters me so much and I crumble. She's become a Dr Who junkie!)

Breaking up over Breaking Bad freshouttaink September 8 2013, 22:56:24 UTC
For me, it's any scene with Jesse Pinkman from Breaking Bad, but especially when he takes the fall for his little brother. Jesse breaks my heart. Too much like some real life kids I know. I want to sob and scream and take him home and give him some direction. All the lost boys out there...

I haven't watched Breaking Bad yet. I know, I know, I should - it has such great reviews. But your description of Jesse's character gets me, even just hearing it now.

Dean Winchester is the classic lost boy, in so many ways. And I think Tim got lost a little while ago, too...

A friend of a friend posted yesterday "Well it could be worse I could be a queer woman in education... oh wait.". And that's pretty much where i've been for the past day. My mother tried to cheer me up last night with "well the policies won't affect you personally" to which I couldn't even begin to respond. Fuck ( ... )

The hallowed halls (cough) of my place of so-called employment rang with sardonic laughter today. Pissing in the wind, as it is otherwise known. We're already broke, with salary freezes and no staff replacement policies in place - what joys will the Mad Monk and Chris 'I have a bad smell under my nose' Pyne bring us? We await with grim and mirthless fortitude. And much vodka ( ... )

You know in an entire party of rich, entitled private school dicks and i'm really not sure there is a worse education minister than Pyne. I still think the best description ever is "mincing poodle" (bless Julia Gillard's way with words). We were told last week national partnership funding was drying up which meant that there would be at least 6 less positions next year. All of us will have to re-apply so joining you guys with the vodka and the grim outlook ( ... )

I know!!! You should have seen us this week at work - every time there was a sniff of a chance for Cathy, we'd be passing it on, tamping down the gleeful hope with an "Oh, that bitch will probbaly win, but at least Cathy's given her a real race." Then all of a sudden... it might happen. It really might. Worst case scenario, if SM does slither and crawl her way to a win, she's lost the chance to be on the frontbench. She was slated to be Minister for Industry. And Cathy has been so positive and gracious throughout. I know she's basically a conservative, but you can be a conservative without being an arsehole. Sophie's both.

How about the last Friday night of the holidays then? Come on over to my place, stay the night. I have to go down to Wang to pick up my Woman on the Saturday. That would be very gradely!
