Male Companion on Doctor Who?

Just read this on Tumblr:

Smith says he starts rehearsing season seven episodes on February 13 and starts filming on February 20. He also reveals that he “wouldn’t mind a male companion now that Karen has left.” Of course, considering how close we are to the start of filming, you would sort of think Smith must have some idea who the next companion ( Read more... )

I would really like a male companion to change things up, and because Moffat...isn't the best at writing women. On the other hand, though, you're completely right that there needs to be at least some female presence on the show.

What I really want is the 'super best-friends' dynamic that we got with Ten and Donna and Eleven and...basically 3/4 of the people he met. No trying to get in his pants, just calling him out on his crap and plenty of hugs.

I think that Moffat is well-intended when he writes women, but more often than not they seem a little off. Like...they're independent until a man comes along. It's a shame, because he has some great ideas and dialogue.

I would love for there to be a gay/otherwise queer companion with no attraction to the Doctor. That would be my ideal situation, just bros-in-space.

If you like crime dramas, have you seen Whitechapel? It isn't based around romantic relationships at all, although it does have an unfortunate dearth of female characters. It treats the ones it has with respect, though, whether they're doctors or prostitutes, which is incredibly rare on television.

I'm just excited for some good Who, though. It can't come soon enough!

I agree totally - good summation.

Yeah that would be lovely. I am so excited for a new character and to get all up in their story! I adore Amy and Rory but I feel we need someone new to shake things up! I just want the Ponds to be happy and settled, being adorable and safe!

Oh man, that is the cutest gif. The Ponds are adorable.

I actually started watching Whitechapel for the exact same reason of Craig Parkinson! He isn't until the second series but it's still definitely worth watching. A bit cheesy in some places, but the characters are solid and the pacing is good.
I shall check it out! I am way into well-done female characters and humor.

I would love for some simple banter and heart-warmingness. The darker bits of the show are so much more effective when they aren't all the time.
