Avatar is the best 3d movie ever. If 3d movies aren't your thing, then that claim may not mean anything to you. But it IS, unquestionably, the best 3d movie of all time

James Cameron is not a great writer; he was too hamhanded and the movie had a lot of flaws.
I have heard that, when it comes to how Avatar was made and what the technical CGI specs mean for the future of movie-making, it is groundbreaking and I won't dispute that. I don't think many people would.
But, as a movie, ignoring the technical specs and just looking at the characterization, plot and acting, it was not a groundbreaking movie. It wasn't even a great movie.
Can you name a better movie though? A better movie that has a fantastic setting like Avatar does. because...if there is nothing better, then it is amazing and awesome by default.
Everything is only the best until it's beaten, and until it's beaten it is by default the best. In turn, nothing is anything less than awesome until something else is better. Therefore, it IS a great movie because there is nothing better that does everything it does.
I was under the impression that plot was the reason the characters did things. Their motivations. There were a number of motivational problems I saw with the characters. I would go into greater detail, but I don't wish to spoil the movie for anyone else who hasn't seen it yet.
If someone were to come out before the movie and spoil everything, yes, the movie EXPERIENCE would be lost. Everything would be clouded by "oh, yeah, I see that coming."
I won't deny it's pretty, but I won't agree that it's revolutionary either.
I didn't mean to imply I thought the movie was perfect across the board. My point is...there is no better movie than Avatar that utilizes 3d as it did. There are movies with better acting, better story, better pacing...etc. But no 1 movie has it all in one better than Avatar does.
This is your opinion, and you're entitled to it. However, it's a well documented fact that you favor looks over depth. (i.e.Your thoughts on PS3 vs. 360.)
As I said above. It's pretty. To say it's anything less than that would do it a disservice. (Assuming you see it in 3D. I wager taking that away would do quite a bit to the experience.)
No, I don't take looks over depth. In fact, typically in a movie it's the dialogue that interests me more than anything else. But a movie that has special effects is first and foremost ABOUT the special effects. So, since no movie can be named that is better, Avatar wins. It doesn't win best drama, best love story, or best tentacle love scene, but it wins at a 3d movie that has...all sorts of other stuff going on too.
I hadn't even seen a preview for the movie before I saw it, and I kept wondering if there was going to be a big twist here or there. Later, I found that the preview gives away practically all of the story. Additionally, I'd say that saying the movie lacked much story gives a lot away, too... The first theater I saw it at (I saw it twice, both in 3D) allowed me to see so much detail that I was floored. I never wanted to blink, and I had a headache for some hours after! Anyway, I think if I wanted to experience an intricate story, I'd need to read a book.
