When my dad died a number of years ago, he had already cleaned out his office at work, but there were still four or five filing cabinets of files from his professional life at home, and since my mother couldn't bear to face it, it was up to me to clean them out. I think I saved maybe four pieces of paper, and the rest got recycled

My mother is turning 75 soon, and is paring down Everything.
Things, even good things, weigh one down.
I have a clear memory of my father burning files when he retired. It was both purging and sad for him.
I remember going through my grandmother's house after she passed. It took two weeks. We found 13 heating pads, (etc), as we waded through stuff. When we finished, my grandfather wandered through the house, smiling widely, the weight of all the years removed from off his shoulders. The house remained spare.
Thanks for the rush of memories. (Mostly, memories don't take up any space, and can happily accumulate for years.)
