To those of you who support government telling private businesses and organizations that they can't discriminate, what's your basis for that

Conceptually, I have issue with a "public accommodation" (I have a somewhat narrower concept of public accommodation than the ADA does) being able to refuse service based on preference. If your a private business not open to the general public, then you should have the right to choose whomever you offer service too. If you're a hotel/gas station/restaurant, you ought not be able to discriminate based on individual characteristics of the person.

A case in point, a couple is driving from point A to point B, its a long trip - a very long one, in a small town they stop for fuel and for a hotel room and are denied service as a mixed race couple - there is no recourse in many cases, in my opinion, by choosing to operate a hotel, gas station or restaurant (and other similar facilities), and getting the needed licensure to do so, you've relinquished some of your freedom to turn away customers.
