sadly you're right, nothing does substitute family, but you have to have the loving family to start with (and truly loving). As far as I concerned myself subconsciously (and being actively aware of this) the day I left for Military School was my Emancipation. There is not much left in the way of family, save my siblings and father, and I don't see them often and I wouldn't see them any less often if I'm not living at home.
