RE:corgi walking problem

I know this site is switching to facebook but I just never seem to get there and I am having a problem with my corgi's feet. She has always walked strangely by dragging her front feet when she steps (I have never had to trim those nails because she wears them down). But she has recently lost some weight and is feeling more energetic so to continue ( Read more... )

Hmm, I have not had this problem with my corgi so I don't really have much advice, but I hope you find a solution for your poor little girl's feet! The boots seem like a good idea, but obviously that isn't quite working either. Have you talked to your vet about it yet?

No, she is due to go in soon but I may email them too. Thanks

I would definitely ask your vet for advice at your next appointment. I haven't had this problem with walking Ein, but sometimes he chews on one of his back legs down to the skin. I have a topical medicine that the vet gave me that helps clear it up. Good luck!

Thanks. I was just thinking that while it is a medical issue, the solutions might be more likely found from fellow corig owners, you know, which boot works for corgis etc. I will definitely address it with the vet soon.

Unfortunately this sounds like it might be a neurological issue. I would schedule something if your annual isn't due soon.

I have actually thought of that but she has always walked this way. The vet is aware of it because of the strange wear of her front toe nails. It has only become a bigger issue as I have tried to increase her exercise and they have started bleeding. I will press for a little more consideration of that possiblity, maybe as she is getting older it is getting worse. Thanks

Have you ever sought a second opinion?

What kind of boots did you use? Connor, my boy Cardigan, has allergies to grass or something. And he used to lick his front paws like crazy. The vet's solution was either a) move to another climate or b) don't let his feet touch the grass ie wash them every time he comes in. So I tried the velcro booties for a short time. (It turned out to be a simple solution. I had been trimming his paw hairs because his littermate sister didn't like long paw hairs. When I left his alone, he was fine. How funny!) Honestly, I didn't find that the velcro booties stayed on that well, but thought I'd throw that out there if you hadn't tried them.

I don't think the musher's helper would work here either. I tried that also for his paws because they started cracking from the licking.

It was the velcro booties that I tried (they were the least expensive so I thought I'd start with them). She didn't seem to mind them but they didn't stay on well. It's interesting to hear from someone who used musher's helper. This has been helpful, thanks.

My corgis all scuff their feet like that. We call it the corgi shuffle. I scold them that they are just too lazy to lift their feet up any farther than necessary to walk. I haven't had the bleeding problem, but then we don't go on long walks on concrete either.

Well, that's the thing my neighborhood doesn't even have side walks so most of the time she is on the grass (except for crossing streets etc). unless she chooses to walk in the street (which she doesn't do a lot). So for our short around the block walks she is fine it is just the longer ones, and we aren't talking miles here, just another block or so, that she has a problem. I think I will try boots again, she didn't mind them and they did work except the type I got didn't stay on well. Thanks for commenting. I'm glad to hear that some other corgis do it to.
