I just deleted a big ol' rant about people who use way too many smileys on message boards and how appalling I find it to fill a post with smileys when referring to such a tragedy

I started using smilies more over at Interference when I realized many people there don't seem to understand sarcasm without them. I treat them like I would any other informal rhetorical device, though, and I only use them in conversations where I feel like they're appropriate. One frustrating thing about the internet is that it's made a lot of people lose all understanding of different levels of communication in writing. I often have to stress these differences when I have online students who are using LOL or refusing to use capital letters in class work.
I feel split in two by all of this. Part of me is feeling very violated and saddened and shocked, because I keep thinking that this could've happened on any campus, and I wonder how this is going to change life at college campuses. The other part of me is frustrated to see everybody pointing a finger but completely missing the point again and again.
Re the first part - I know I use a zillion smilies in my every day posts on Interference (ESPECIALLY the simple  one, because yeah - a tiny joke might be lost on the wrong reader, and you'll get jumped on without it). But jeez, there's a time and a place, you know? I just don't see why you have to put ten hug smiles to convey your sorrow and support

I tried sending you an email at the address above with the underscore after the name, but it wouldn't let me send it like that. So I erased the underscore and just used your name and then the hotmail bit. I hope that worked!
Hey there! Thanks for stopping by and asking - do you mind if I ask how you ended up here? Are we in a community together, or did you randomly stumble across my LJ?
I just ask because I do try to keep my friends list to people I "know," whether in person or people I've interacted with elsewhere online.
I just randomly stumbled across you LJ and I looked your profile and noticed that we have something common and.. jep. :) Do you mean that you don't wanna add people who know you in real life? If that's so I think that you don't have anything to worry about that thing, cause I live in Finland. :D
