Tech stumper

I'm getting sound from saved files, but not at all from streaming media via the web, of any sort.

Has this ever happened to anyone else? Anyone have any idea how to fix it? I'm on an Intel-based Mac laptop, using Firefox (though I've had no luck switching over to Safari.

I'm stumped! Help?

I am on a linux system with Firefox, but on my computer the same thing happens sometimes. However I think it only happens when I start Firefox after I played sound with some other program, because it somehow won't always share access to the sound system correctly and think the other program is still using the speakers when it really isn't. Do you have any other programs open that play sound when you try streaming video in Firefox?
