Last night, Franklin Bruno, who plays piano on the Mountain Goats records, was there for the show, and in the encore, he started up the opening chords of this song, and the crowd went apeshit, and then they had him STOP, and the crowd started to complain, and John was like "oh, of COURSE we're playing 'No Children' next" and then they went into it. Well, I really love the song, and I really think the whole Buffy/Spike thing is where the show went completely off the rails, so, uh, I'm glad she didn't. Erm.

Well, see, that's the thing. I was appalled by the Buffy/Spike relationship, and by the smarmy, lovey-dovey vids that seemed ubiquitous, so this was to be kind of an antidote The song captures the beyond disfunctional nature of their relationship, to me -- crashing and burning together. I think the idea came about before the end of the show, though.
Yeah, see, I don't buy the relationship on the show, at least not beyond "Seeing Red," and I also tend to think that there's some real if fucked-up tenderness and catharsis in the song (and the rest of the Alpha Couple song cycle) that I don't read at all in the Buffy/Spike pairing.
But, yes, better this song than "My Immortal Beloved," for sure!
