Right. Based on half-memories of having a similar problem two years ago when I built the system, I correctly diagnosed and corrected the problem. It turns out that either the spare cable or the spare graphics port of my power supply are fatally broken. In order to minimize testing time, I changed both variables, and the system works again

Leave it running, open the case, scribble on the power supply and close it up again.
