lyonesse once asked me what I used my livejournal for. I thought about it, and realized that I still mostly write about projects I'm working on, random things that I'm doing that interest me enough to jot down. I'm not entirely sure why it interests anyone else enough to read, but I already knew you guys were wierdos. Maybe you just feel better knowing

Seeing as I'm living in Alaska, I'm afraid I can't help you move. Which is disappointing, because moving is always a great adventure with the right people, full of fun and laughter and "What's this? Wow, I'd forgotten I had that!"

But then again, I'm so used to moving I find it odd that I'm no longer helping some friend or friend of friend move at least once a month.

so how do you get copper out of the rock? i can look up the current industrial method, but i'm curious how you'd do it. i have a guess from first principles, but it's probably wrong. :)

Your guess from first principles is probably correct, actually. :) We're having fun recreating Bronze Age techniques: Build large clay and rock furnace. Melt copper ore with charcoal and bellows. Iron oxide (hammerscale) for flux. The net result, if all goes well, will be a "bloom" - a copper growth surrounded by slag. We'll hammer the slag off.

In practice, I doubt it'll work. This is the first run. But it's a lot of fun!
