Thinking on the outside

Instead of artwork, please enjoy another longwinded story!

A while back I had asked an artist, whose opinion I greatly respect, advice on a particular style of cartooning. In the course of the short conversation, he said casually, "It's not that hard!" I immediately felt a familiar wave of embarrassment wash over me! Everytime I approach an ( Read more... )

I may not be a true artist, let alone actively pursuing an art career, but I do understand the gist of what you're saying. Some accomplished people think that anyone can do it while failing to understand the same tactics they used will not bring the same results to another. The 'Oh, why are you asking me these questions?' attitude really sucks. It's as if you can't be a member of the club unless you're making money off what you do (full time art job in your case), and that somehow negates you from being able to ask questions. It's all bullshit. I'm sure there are artists out there that are willing to talk to you and/or give you pointers on things. Now if I were to approach someone with art questions they'd tell me to stop drawing. :p

Yeah - but especially at a Comic Convention - it's warranted :)
Professional artists are bombarded with the same questions over and over! By the end of the day most of them don't want to talk about art at all!

Oh, sure! I have a great relationship with plenty of artists - professional and non-professiional.
Pointers like, "Oh I hold my pen this way" or "I found this great paper" and the like are easy to come by.
Seeking answers to loaded questions like, "I'm not sure why I can't wrap my brain around this perspective issue" elicit blank stares and replies like "you just gotta do it" :)

And you ARE a true artist! I seen it!!

I practice the art of the word, not the drawn image. But thank you. ^_^

Ah so that's the issue- these accomplished artists can't help you with perspectives and other such complicated questions. No wonder you're scratching your head. It's like asking a math teacher how he solved an equation and he can't tell you. Aggravating indeed!
