Is this a test?

It starts with questions, and the knowledge that questions come with answers. They ask: do you know your name, do you know your duty, do you know your place. She learns quickly; the world changes. Her name is dochka, devushka, malenkaya, her duty is silence and her place is under the bed.

(They take her mother quickly, in the night, barely a scream in her mouth. Perhaps she comes to her duty by inheritance: passed on from her mother, with blood on the floor and teeth clenched in her mouth, on the day she was born.)

ISABEL, THOUGH. I am actually gasping, I knew you would fill this prompt because hi, who are you, but really, this is so perfect and I feel like it's such a good piece of the time and the place. Ugh, this is exactly what I wanted. (Someday we will both write narrative novels for this country; it will be absurd, it will be glorious and there will be vodka.)

♥! So glad. I saw this and strongly suspected it was for me, haha. Because who are you and who am I and what are we if not self-consistent.

We need to make like Coast of Utopia literarians and have a Russian feelings salon. And lo, there will be vodka. (Russian Standard, eh.)

Ach, yes. You and I and a bottle of Russian Standard. It's a date, lady.

(Red Plenty in my hand in two days! Hee. I love that it's the only one from my package due to arrive ON my birthday. Oh, Amazon, you tease me.)

this is so beautifully dark, and the stark feeling of the citizens of Soviet Russia definitely shines through. Good job!
