his head was a city full of paper buildings. elementary. holmes, watson. ~2000 words. In the end, London is only a place and Sherlock is only a set of flesh and bones that used to occupy space in it.
HE WOULD. He would wait until the last second and then watch her come through the door like some asshole. That is to say, this is spot-on and I adore Watson, so much, and this is all Holmes being sincere, which fascinated me about JLM's acting - that he has a good line between spouting bullshit and actually trying not to lie. She is unafraid to look him in the eye when he's being either and still doesn't leave, which is what makes her extraordinary. (Though then of course I am waiting for her to leave.) I keep typing when really it's just this fic rings true and I love slipping into the voice you write with, it's beautiful.
Ugh, thanks, Pauline! I have such a lot of fucking feelings about this idiots, I can't. Also, you totally pointed out why I adore JLM's Holmes? I feel like he has this openness and vulnerability to him that just really speaks to me? It's so damn great.
I've seen the pilot twice and a half by now, which is a lot for me, but I love so many damn things about it. The thing about Holmes, always, is that he's an asshole, and I don't like "but he has a heart! somewhere!" apologia that always happens in adaptations. I love that while that openness is partly due to Watson, JLM makes it seem much more intrinsic to the character, because while "Watson is the only exception to Holmes' asshole nature" is nice, I don't care for it. Agreeeee, basically.
I've just realized that in every universe I hate Watson leaving Holmes for Mary. Thanks for making me it hate it in this one too. I now have a perfect record. *sniffle*
Great writing, very sad. Holmes always needs his Watson and it's shown beautifully here.
This is like a weight sitting on my lungs. You do such wonderful things with words. I don't know if I want to cry or shower you with adoration. I love everything you've done here.
