People even think of themselves this way, which is why there are so many down-and-out people voting to give tax breaks to the same bankers who've been robbing them for years, and booing when the mere concept of unions shows up for a few seconds in a football game.

This. SO much this.

Also, it's always interesting to me that the same people who are willing to shell out $200 on a ticket, or $80 on a jersey are somehow shocked when they hear the salaries of the players.

Oh I know... with as much energy, time, money, and committment people put into sports in general and football fandom specifically, it's absurd... people who spend hours every day talking, reading, thinking, fantasy-ing about football... and complain?!? ...these guys are absolutely modern day gladiators- the owners make absurd absurd absurd amounts of money- they deserve a HUGE slice of it... heck, it should be a player union owned league as far as I'm concerned- the level of committment and risk associated with playing the game that so many people love watching...

I was at a bar watching the Vikings game Thursday- it was kinda a last minute descision that I wanted to watch it, so I just went down the road in Ellsworth (and discovered it was $1 tap night!).. there was a guy there who yelled so loud, got so angry, it was shocking. If he cares- or least expresses it- about ANYTHING in his life as much as he cared about that game, I'd be suprised. It was appalling behavior for a child let alone an adult.

"the level of commitment and risk associated with playing the game that so many people love watching..."

YES! These guys set their whole lives around this game at such an early age, and one wrong hit. . .

Also, regarding the Ellsworthian and his inappropriate display of emotion, I think it's kind of a sad commentary on our society that football is one of the few things a lot of men feel like they CAN openly display emotion about. ridiculous.
