Every time I watch an episode of this thing, I'm like, whoa, this is not what I ever expect from a Gundam series! Then again, granted, I also don't have a lot of experience with non-UC Gundam...

It's got a *lot* of callbacks to UC (mostly on the Zeon side, come to think of it) and some non-UC stuff, too. Char and Garma, Kycilia, M'Quve; Side 3 wants to be independent. The tone is most similar to 08th MS Team (the best UC series and I will fight over that, though 0083 is my favorite). You kind of get the artificial Newtypes, too. The non-UC parallels are, probably to a lot of fanboys' consternation, mostly Wing: you've got the Relena character and the child terrorists/trained soldiers ( ... )
