The radio just announed that Czeslaw Milosz is dead.

I'm sorry to hear that. He died of natural causes, I assume?

Death is always sad, but how wonderful to have lived long enough to see the phoenix-like rise of his beloved country into a more prosperous, more successful, happier place. To have seen the horrors that he must have, to have wondered as he must have if there would ever be happiness again, and then to live sixty years more to see the times he lived through remembered in a Poland the people who died in the Warsaw Uprising would have wished for their people... that's truly a beautiful, poetic thing.

i immedately thought of you when i saw that announcement on Yahoo!America news. i'm glad he has been remembered by others outside of his native land in such a positive way - the links that Yahoo gave to articles about his life were inspiring.

God. Milosz has been one of my favorite writers for years. It's hard to imagine a world without his commentary.
