[1] The Dream (With Mal and Cori)

Sep 08, 2010 20:38

In his dream, he was standing alone on a beach, staring out at the ocean.

Inexplicably, there was an elevator several hundred feet away. But then, this was a dream.

There was no one in sight, though he knew that she was close by. Walking with the children on the beach. That's what he remembered. That's how it was supposed to go. They would be ( Read more... )

It was a drastically different scene from what he had encountered in Arthur's dream.

He didn't want to tamper with anything this time. Not until he knew just what sort of dream he was dealing with; was this still his own realm, or was this actually the dreamer's territory? Any surprises like the last time weren't very high up on his want list, but as far as he knew if he just kept to himself he wouldn't trigger whatever subconscious defense system this one may have had in place. Though he couldn't much that could be used as such along the empty dreamscape....

He wrapped his jacket a little tighter against the wind, feeling the man before he actually saw him.

And he kept walking toward him. Well, he supposed there was only one way to find out if his suspicions were right.

There was something... different.

He couldn't quite place it, not at first, but out of the corner of his eye he could see someone walking toward him and it wasn't who it should have been. Putting his hands in his pockets, he wrapped his hand around the totem that lay there before turning his head to get a better look.

At first the dream started out with the memory of Mal. The usual things she did on this beach. Walking along with her beloved children, playing in the sand with them, everything she had done with them in the memory.

But every now and then she would look around. Confused. In a daze. Wondering where she was, who these children really were... and then the memory would snap back into place. At least, for the moment. So long as Cori left it undisturbed.

But of course he didn't. Already she could feel the foreigner approaching her Dom. And that snapped the projection fully out of the memory. She walked away from the children now, letting them play in the sand alone. They didn't notice. Not the way she did at least. And it didn't matter. They weren't real.

But Dom was. And she watched him carefully, standing near a large mass of rocks, watching the stranger approaching. Waiting now.

The Corinthian could feel the new presense as well, this one possibly even stronger, and he couldn't help tensing. What had Arthur called them, projections? Those over protective dreams.

But nothing happened. So maybe this was working out after all. Though he still had the urge to force the projection away now before it got it in its mind to deal with his intruding, that would count as tampering, and that would still hurt this more than it would help.

Dammit.

He just had to stay focused on the dreamer for now. And when it looked like the man finally noticed him he even gave a little wave. "It was Cobb, wasn't it?"
